The Great Rann of Kutch is a Salt Marsh located in the Thar desert in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India. Thar desert is also known as The Great Desert. Thar desert is India’s largest desert and world’s 17th largest desert.
The salt desert covers the area of around 7500 sq km and it is said to be the world’s largest salt desert.
About 85% of the Thar desert is located in India and 15% of it is located in Pakistan.
Kutch is one of the hottest places in India. The temperate peaks to 49.5 °C in summers and in winters it reduces up to 0°C. The Kutch region receives an average rainfall of around 14 inches every year.
Though the area faces serious water scarcity, the rainfall helps in lowering the temperature. It also helps in sustaining agriculture in the area.
Ways To Reach Rann Of Kutch:
Bhuj city has an airport, so it is a convenient way to travel to Kutch by flight. From Bhuj to Kutch by road for around 70Km, approximately 80-90min.
We also have an option to travel by train. The nearest railway station is Bhuj railway station. From Bhuj to Kutch again it’s a roadway and its same about 70-75Km.
The roads of Gujarat are nice. If you would like to have a road trip you can take that option also.
I was travelling from Delhi to Bhuj with my friends, we found an economical and time-saving solution, we had travelled from Delhi to Ahmedabad by flight and from Ahmedabad to Bhuj via Train. We also got a chance to explore Ahmedabad.
Best Time To Visit Rann Of Kutch:
The very famous Rann Utsav is the best time to travel to Kutch. It takes place from the month of November to February. Many arrangments are made in Rann Utsav by Gujrat Tourism.
The climate is pleasant during that time. Being a desert area winters are the best time to visit Kutch.
The salt desert (white desert) looks fabulous on full moon day. I would recommend to go on full moon day and watch the beauty of the sparkling white desert in the cold breeze till late at night.
Usually, the white desert area is restricted till 8 pm, but during the full moon and 2-3 days before-after full moon day you are allowed to enjoy the full moon view till 11 pm.
When I was at the White Desert on full moon night the 1st thought that came to my mind was few things cannot be captured in-camera. They just need to be felt. It was a beautiful experience.
About Rann Utsav:
The Gujarat Tourism organizes this Rann Utsav from the month of November to February.
The great rann city is made available with many of the luxurious tents. Staying in a Tent at Kutch was a different experience for me. There are many mud huts (mud houses) for a stay which is also a good option. We made our self comfortable by booking our tent with Kutch Utsav Tour (wats app on 9359775177).
During the Rann Utsav, we had traditional events organized. The cultural festival, an exhibition of creative hand made work, the traditional food of Kutch, etc. They have stage performances of traditional dance, drama, and songs. All this is quite unique and entertaining.
Before we move forward to the place to visit in Rann Of Kutch, let’s check out the tips and tricks for travellers. The TO-DO list for BackPackers.
